“Your driver was amazing, the van hadn't moved for over 15 years, everything was seized up, but he didn't stop until it was moving again. The man deserves praise.”

Kevin Parsonage

“Great quote, over £100 more than other competitors. Recovery driver very helpful with my non runner van that wasn't in the easiest position to take away.”

What you're actually getting paid for.

Scrap yards pay for steel weight. The metals market moves daily, right now, a Ford Transit in scrap condition yields roughly £130–£160 per tonne of vehicle weight, or around £180–£280 for the whole van. That figure is set by commodity prices, not by what the van once cost or what you need from it.

The catalytic converter changes the number. A diesel Transit with an intact cat contains platinum group metals (platinum, palladium, rhodium) worth £40–£120 depending on the engine and current spot prices. A missing or stolen catalyst knocks that straight off the quote. If yours has been taken, tell us, there's no point hiding it, we'll find out when the driver arrives.

We also check salvage before quoting scrap. If the engine runs, the gearbox shifts, and the body panels are straight, the van may be worth significantly more as a salvage vehicle than as scrap metal. Our system runs both calculations, you see whichever number is higher. That's not a marketing line; it's how the pricing actually works.

What the collection covers

  • Free collection anywhere in 90% of UK postcodes, no weighbridge adjustment on the day.
  • DVLA-authorised Authorised Treatment Facility. Certificate of Destruction issued automatically.
  • DVLA "sold for scrap" notification done by us, the van leaves your name on collection day.
  • Same-day bank transfer from the driver on arrival. Not "within 3–5 working days".

One thing to know about the CoD

A Certificate of Destruction is a legal document confirming the vehicle has been depolluted and destroyed at a licensed facility. Once issued, the van cannot be re-registered or driven on the road. It also ends your liability for road tax, insurance, and any future DVLA correspondence about the vehicle. Keep a copy, DVLA occasionally asks for it years later.

Scrapping your van, common questions

What's my scrap van actually worth?

+

Depends on three things: the weight of the vehicle, the current steel price, and whether the catalytic converter is intact. A Transit-size van typically yields £180–£320 at today's metals prices. A lighter compact van (Vivaro, Trafic, Sprinter 313) sits lower; a heavy LWB or high-roof sits higher. We'll quote the live figure, there's no point guessing.

What counts as a scrap van?

+

Broadly, anything where the cost of keeping it roadworthy outweighs what it's worth. Failed MOT on a structural issue. Cracked block. Chassis rot. Fire damage. Flood damage. Accident write-off. We also check whether the van is worth more as salvage (working parts) than as scrap, if it is, you'll see the higher figure.

Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?

+

Yes. Every van we scrap goes to a DVLA-authorised Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). The CoD is issued automatically, DVLA is notified, and the van is legally off your name. You don't have to do any paperwork beyond handing over the keys.

What happens to the van after you collect it?

+

It goes to a licensed ATF where it's depolluted, fluids drained, battery removed, airbags deactivated, refrigerant recovered. Anything with salvage value gets stripped before the carcass goes to the shredder. Catalysts are recovered for platinum group metals. Nothing goes to landfill illegally; the ATF process is the same regardless of whether the van is worth £200 or £2,000.

Do I need to drain fluids or strip anything out?

+

No. Leave it exactly as it sits, tank full or empty, tools in the back, dirty, whatever. The ATF handles depollution. If you want your personal belongings back, take them before the driver arrives. Once it's gone, it's gone.

How long does scrap collection take?

+

Usually within 24–48 hours of accepting the offer. We'll confirm a 2-hour collection window by text. Driver arrives, checks ID and V5, loads the van, pays you on the spot by bank transfer.

Will you scrap a van without a V5?

+

Yes, with conditions. If you're the registered keeper and can prove identity, we can usually proceed. If the V5 is genuinely lost, the ATF will need a DVLA-acknowledged sale record. We'll guide you through what's needed, it's more common than you'd think.

Can I scrap a van that's on finance?

+

Not directly, no, you can't legally scrap a vehicle with outstanding finance without the lender's consent. What usually happens: we settle the outstanding balance first (from the sale proceeds) and the finance house authorises the disposal. Contact us before accepting the offer and we'll check whether the settlement route works for your situation.
