The ULEZ effect on London scrap volumes
Since the ULEZ expanded to cover almost all of Greater London in August 2023, the volume of pre-2016 diesel vans being scrapped in the capital has increased sharply. For a sole trader or small business based inside the zone, a non-compliant diesel van carries a £12.50 daily charge, roughly £3,000 a year for a five-day working week. Against a scrap value of £300–£600, the arithmetic is straightforward.
If your van is in that category, pre-2016 diesel, too expensive to retrofit, not worth putting on the road for what it would cost, scrapping is the clean exit. You get the metal value, a Certificate of Destruction, and DVLA notified the same day.
Could it be worth more than scrap?
Not every van coming out of London is pure scrap. If the engine still runs, the gearbox is serviceable, and the body panels are intact, the salvage network may pay above scrap, there's active demand for pre-2016 van parts outside the ULEZ zone.
