Scrapping vans in Glasgow
Glasgow's Low Emission Zone covers the city centre and became enforceable for private and light commercial vehicles in June 2023. Unlike the English CAZ model (daily charge), Glasgow's LEZ uses a penalty fine structure, a first offence is £60, rising to £480 for repeat entries. For a tradesperson or courier relying on an older diesel van for work in the city, the cumulative cost makes continued operation impractical.

Glasgow LEZ compliance, which vans are affected?
The Glasgow LEZ applies to vehicles that don't meet minimum emissions standards. For diesel vans, the minimum standard is Euro 6, broadly, vans registered from September 2016. Pre-2016 diesel vans are non-compliant. Petrol vans must meet Euro 4 (registered from 2006). Electric and hydrogen vehicles are exempt.
If your van fails this standard and you're operating in Glasgow, the options are: retrofit (expensive and not always available), replace, or scrap. For older, higher-mileage vans where the vehicle value is close to or below the retrofit cost, scrapping is usually the most economical exit.
Scrap value vs. selling in Scotland
