The three things that change your van's value
1. Build year
2018 is the rough watershed. From 2018 back to about 2010, vans tend to price as better than scrap, there's salvage value in the components even if the van itself is past commercial use. Earlier than 2010 and we're usually into pure scrap pricing, which is based on metal weight and the catalyst value, still a real number, just a different market.
2. Mileage
Less load-bearing than people think. A 2017 Sprinter with 220,000 miles on the original engine is more valuable than a 2014 with 110k and a knackered turbo. The scrappage market cares about mechanical soundness, not the number on the dash. That said, mileage does start to matter significantly above 250,000 on most makes, beyond that, the pool of interested salvage buyers narrows.
3. Condition
Body damage, rust, electrical faults, MOT status. None of these put the value at zero, they shift it from salvage to scrap. The form above runs both calculations for you. The condition questions matter most around: does the engine run, is the body structurally sound, and are there any known write-off markers on the HPI.
How make and model affect value
Two vans of the same age and mileage can be worth significantly different amounts depending on make. Salvage pricing is driven by parts demand, how many operators are running that engine and gearbox, and what the independent aftermarket will pay for working components.
Ford Transit / Custom
Most liquid market in the UK. High salvage demand for 2.0 EcoBlue engines and Transit Custom body panels keeps values healthy across all conditions.
Mercedes Sprinter
Best value retention at high mileage. OM651 engine commands a parts premium. Full Mercedes service history adds meaningfully to the offer.
VW Transporter T5/T6
Premium residuals throughout, even high-mileage T6s attract strong salvage interest from the camper conversion market.
Vauxhall Vivaro / Renault Trafic
Pre-2019 1.6 BiTurbo models carry an engine-reputation discount above 130k miles. Post-2019 2.0 engines are better regarded.
Nissan NV200 / NV400
Good salvage values on the NV200 due to its popularity with last-mile operators. NV400 shares platform with Master/Movano, widening the parts pool.

Rough value ranges to calibrate your expectations
These are approximate ranges across the makes we buy most frequently. Your reg will give you a precise number.
| Age / condition | Typical range | Market |
|---|---|---|
| 2019–2022, runner, reasonable condition | £3,500–£9,000+ | Used / salvage |
| 2015–2018, runner, worn | £1,200–£4,000 | Salvage |
| 2015–2018, non-runner / damaged | £400–£1,500 | Salvage / scrap |
| Pre-2015, any condition | £200–£800 | Scrap / salvage |
| Pre-2010, any condition | £120–£400 | Scrap |
Ranges reflect typical offers across common makes (Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro). Premium makes (Sprinter, Transporter) sit at the top of each bracket; mainstream makes at the lower end.
What's my van worth, common questions
How much is my van worth right now?
+
Depends on three things: build year, mileage, and condition. Vans up to 2018 with sound mechanicals usually price as 'better than scrap', typical range £400-£1,800 with us. Older or rougher vans price as scrap, typically £120-£280. Enter your reg above for your actual number.
What makes my van worth more?
+
Working engine and gearbox, intact body, no major rust, MOT (or recently expired), full service history. The salvage chain pays for parts that can be recovered and resold to other operators.
What makes my van worth less?
+
Cracked engine block, rotted chassis, fire damage, theft recovery, missing V5. Doesn't make it worthless, just shifts it from 'better than scrap' to 'scrap', and the number reflects that.
Are private sale prices higher than your offer?
+
Sometimes. On clean, recent-year vans with low miles, you can usually get more privately, at the cost of three weeks and a lot of phone calls. Try Trader.co.uk free if that's the route you'd rather take.
Why is a Sprinter worth more than a Vivaro at the same age and mileage?
+
Parts demand. The Sprinter OM651 engine and 7G-Tronic gearbox have a deep, active aftermarket. Salvage buyers pay more when they know what they can sell quickly. Make and model matter as much as age.
My van's been sat on the drive for two years, is it still worth something?
+
Usually yes, if the body and frame are sound. Flat battery, seized brakes, and flat tyres don't significantly reduce the offer, they're expected on a stood vehicle. Corrosion through the floor or chassis is the real value killer.
