Why non-runners are worth more than people think

Mercedes Sprinter van rear view

A van that won't run still has a working gearbox, a working diff, four working wheels, an intact body, a usable interior, and (often) a fixable engine. The salvage network buys the parts people don't think about, turbos that are still good even though the engine seized, ECUs that survived a clutch fire, EGR coolers that pass on a cleaner van. That's why our offer on a non-runner is usually three or four times the scrap-only price.

Common non-runner causes we price every week

  • Cracked head / blown head gasket
  • Snapped timing belt or chain
  • Seized engine
  • Failed turbocharger
  • ECU failure / immobiliser fault
  • Dual-mass flywheel collapse
  • Long-stand corrosion (six months+ off the road)

How the collection works

We arrange a flatbed recovery truck, no charge to you. The driver arrives in the agreed 2-hour window, carries out a condition check, and loads the van. Payment is made by bank transfer before the truck leaves. You don't need to move the van to the road or do anything to prepare it.

What we need from you: the keys if available (we can work around missing keys in most cases), your ID, and the van to be accessible, not buried three deep in a yard or locked behind a gate we can't open. That's it.

What to tell us on the form

The more detail you give in the condition notes, the more accurate the offer. You don't need a technical diagnosis, symptoms are fine. "Won't crank", "starts but cuts out after a minute", "drove it onto the drive three years ago and hasn't started since", all useful. If you've had it looked at and have a quote for repairs, mention the figure: it helps us price the component value correctly.

For a detailed breakdown of what different faults mean for your offer, see our guide to selling a van that won't start.

The one thing to avoid

Don't strip parts before selling. Removing the seats, wheels, or ancillaries before we collect reduces the offer, those items have value in-situ. Leave the van as it sits.

Non-runners, common questions

Can you collect a van that won't start?

+

Yes. Our recovery partners load non-runners as standard. No need for you to push it anywhere.

What if the van's been sat for years?

+

Doesn't matter. We'll handle the recovery, and we won't deduct for flat tyres, dead battery, or rotten brake hoses.

What if it's blocking a driveway and needs urgent removal?

+

Tell us in the form notes. We can usually expedite to next-day for genuine blockers.

What if I don't have keys?

+

We can usually still collect, let us know in the notes when you accept.

How do I describe the fault on the form if I'm not sure what's wrong?

+

Use symptoms, 'cranks but won't fire', 'cuts out after 5 minutes', 'won't turn over at all'. That's enough for us to price it. You don't need a diagnosis.

Will a seized engine affect the offer significantly?

+

Yes, the engine is written off, which reduces the offer compared to a runner. But the gearbox, axles, body, and other components still hold value. A seized-engine Transit typically comes in well above scrap value.
