Birmingham operates one of the UK's most comprehensive Clean Air Zones outside London, a Class D zone covering the city centre that charges non-compliant cars, vans, and HGVs daily. For vans registered before September 2016 that don't meet Euro 6 diesel standards, the daily charge makes continued operation in the city centre uneconomical for most sole traders and small businesses.

Scrap or salvage, which applies to your van?

Not every non-compliant or end-of-life van in Birmingham is pure scrap weight. If the engine runs, the drivetrain is intact, and the body is sound, the parts market will pay above crush price. We check both markets when you enter your reg, you get whichever number is higher.

The CAZ discount applies in the used market (buyers there face the charge); it doesn't apply in the salvage market (breakers don't operate the van). So the spread between used value and salvage value on older diesels in Birmingham has narrowed, which means scrapping or selling to salvage is often the more rational choice.
