Built for traders who don't want a week of admin

Mercedes Sprinter company van side view

If you're running one or two vans through your books, selling one shouldn't take more than five minutes. We do the V5, the DVLA notification, the VAT-correct receipt, and the bank transfer to the company account. You give us a reg and a postcode, accept the number, and we're done.

If you're running a fleet

Three or more vans changes the conversation, we'll price the lot in one quote, collect on a single day, and avoid the per-vehicle admin. Talk to fleet.

VAT: the most commonly misunderstood part

If your business is VAT-registered and you claimed VAT back when you bought the van, the sale is a taxable supply. We expect a VAT invoice from you. The offer we make is an ex-VAT price, you invoice us at the agreed amount plus 20% VAT and account for it on your return.

If you didn't reclaim VAT on the original purchase (for example, the van was bought second-hand under the margin scheme), the VAT treatment on the sale is different. If you're unsure, check with your accountant before accepting. We're used to both scenarios and will issue the right documentation either way.

Finance and ownership, check before you sell

Before accepting any offer, confirm who holds the title. If the van is on hire purchase in the company's name, the finance house is the legal owner until the final payment. We can settle the outstanding balance directly and pay the equity to the company account, but you need a settlement figure first.

Leased vans cannot be sold. Only HP and outright-purchased vans are transferable. If you're not sure what type of agreement you have, check the first page of your finance documents, the type must be stated under FCA rules.

For a full walkthrough of the tax and VAT process, see our company van selling guide.

What the company needs at collection

  • V5C in the company name (or confirmation you've applied for a replacement)
  • ID for the director or authorised signatory
  • Company bank account details for payment
  • VAT number if applicable
  • Finance settlement letter if HP is being cleared on the day

Company vans, common questions

Can a Ltd company sell a van through Vansold?

+

Yes. The seller name on the form should be the registered keeper or a director with authority to sell. Payment goes to the company bank account on the V5.

What about VAT on a company van sale?

+

If the van was bought VAT-qualifying and you're VAT-registered, the sale is normally VAT-able and we'll pay the gross. Confirm your VAT status when you accept the quote and we'll issue the right paperwork.

Sole trader, what do I need?

+

Same as a private seller: V5, ID at collection, account details to be paid into. We'll handle DVLA notification on your behalf.

Got more than one or two vans?

+

Talk to the fleet team, fleet pricing is bespoke and avoids per-vehicle admin. There's a click-to-WhatsApp on the fleet page.

Our van is on a lease, can we sell it?

+

No. A leased van belongs to the finance company. You can only sell a van you own outright or one on hire purchase (once settled). If you're on a lease, speak to the lessor about early termination.

Who signs the sale documentation for a limited company?

+

A director or other authorised signatory. We'll need to see ID matching the registered keeper details on the V5. If the company has a different trading name to the registered keeper name, have company registration documents to hand.
