Selling a van without an MOT

A van without a current MOT isn't untradeable, it's just not legally driveable on public roads. Those are different things. The salvage and scrap markets don't require roadworthiness. What they care about is whether the engine runs, whether the drivetrain is intact, and what the components are worth to the parts trade.

We collect vans with no MOT every day. It's one of the most common conditions we buy in, expired MOTs from vans that have come off the road, failed tests that weren't worth repairing, and SORNed vehicles that have been sitting unused for months or years.

Failed MOT vs expired MOT, does it matter?

For our purposes, not significantly. Both mean the van can't legally be driven on public roads, and both mean we collect rather than asking you to drive it. The distinction that does matter is what the MOT failure was for, if you have the failure sheet, mention the reasons in the notes on the form. A van that failed for a worn tyre is very different from one that failed for a cracked chassis rail.

Should you fix it before selling?

The short answer for most sellers is no. Here's the arithmetic:

  • Minor fails (tyres, wiper blades, bulbs): cost £50–£200 to fix but add little to the offer, a van with a recent MOT vs. an expired one isn't worth materially more in salvage pricing.
  • Medium fails (brake pads, discs, exhaust): the fix cost (£300–£600) rarely recovers fully in a higher offer. Borderline case, get our offer both ways.
  • Major fails (structural damage, engine issues, timing belt): almost never worth repairing before selling. The repair cost far exceeds the uplift in offer price. Sell as-is.

The exception: if the van is recent and low-mileage enough to have meaningful used-market value (broadly, under 5 years old and under 80,000 miles), then a current MOT does open up the used-market channel, which may pay more than salvage. In that scenario, getting the van through a test can be worth it.

What the law says about selling without an MOT

There is no legal requirement to have a valid MOT to sell a vehicle. You cannot drive it to a buyer or to us, but you can sell it, and we come to you. The buyer (us) is responsible for how it moves from collection point to destination.

One thing you do need to do: notify DVLA of the sale. We handle this on your behalf as part of the collection process. You don't need to do anything separately.

Selling without an MOT, common questions

Can I sell a van with no MOT?

+

Yes. No MOT is one of the most common conditions we buy in. You don't need a current MOT, enter your reg and we'll price it as it stands.

Does no MOT affect the offer?

+

Less than you'd think on an older or high-mileage van. If the engine and drivetrain are sound, the salvage value doesn't depend on roadworthiness. On a newer, lower-mileage van, an expired MOT can nudge the offer down slightly versus a recently tested example.

Does the van need to be driveable to collect?

+

No. We collect non-runners as standard using a flatbed recovery truck. If the van won't start, tell us in the notes when you accept the offer.

What if it failed its MOT, should I get it fixed first?

+

Depends on the cost. Minor advisory fails (tyres, wipers, brake pads) cost less to fix than they add to the offer, so repairing first rarely pays. Major structural or engine fails almost never justify the spend, sell it as-is and let us price the components.

What about road tax, do I need to renew it to sell?

+

No. You can sell a SORN'd or untaxed van. You won't get a tax refund if the van isn't currently taxed, but that's the only difference. We handle DVLA notification of the sale.

Can I drive the van to you without an MOT?

+

No, driving without a valid MOT is illegal unless you're driving directly to a pre-booked test. Don't drive it. We collect from your address.
